“A child’s mind can soak up events and impressions faster than a pit crew can change tires! But sadly, a child suffering from illness typically has fewer chances to experience the wonders of everyday life, let alone go to a summer camp."
The Victory Junction Gang Camp is a camp designed for kids with disabilities and illnesses that stop them form attending most summer camps. The camp will be free of cost for the families if the the campers. The camp founded by Kyle and Patti Petty, in memory of their late son, Adam, will be a year-round, multi-disease camp serving children from the Carolinas and Virginia. It will provide sessions to children ages seven to 15 with life-threatening illnesses. The proposed summer camping program is slated to consist of eight, week long sessions, consisting of 125 campers for each session. The camp’s goal is to accommodate young people with life threatening illnesses like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, spina bifida, and sickle cell anemia, just to name a few. Richard and Lynda Petty donated the necessary acreage to begin the camp near their home in Randleman, North Carolina.
The Victory Junction Gang Camp will have a racing theme that allows campers to begin their experience by entering the camp through a tunnel and crossing a starting line into the world of racing. The 62 acre campsite is located approximately 15 minutes outside of Greensboro, NC, among the foothills of the Piedmont Mts. The property consists of rolling terrain surrounded by hardwood forests, abundant with creeks and streams, and a six acre lake. When complete, Victory Junction's 75-acre site will have more than 36 buildings, including a dining hall, gym, pool, theater, therapeutic equestrian center, arts and crafts center, race shop, and 16 camper cabins.
This camp is a recent addition to Paul Newman’s “Hole in the Wall Gang Camps,” a charity organization which has camping facilities for chronically ill children in Connecticut, New York, Florida, California, France, and Ireland.
Camp is all about kicking back and just being yourself.
